If you are a first time rider of an MS 150, there are several
things to keep in mind:
First off, everyone needs to review the basics of cycling,
especially as it applies to a ride such as the MS 150. There are great resouces on the MS 150 site.
Everyone needs to start training in advance of the MS 150.
There are several theories on how to prepare to ride 180 miles
in two days. The
BP MS150 web page has a recommended training plan
on its website.
Optionally, search the web for a training plan. There are several
available. It may be most useful to find a plan to train for a
Century (100 mile) ride and modify it to include longer Sunday
rides also.
Of course, it is very difficult to stick to a training plan
alone, but the
ExxonMobil Cycling Team
and the
MS 150 are here to help with training rides and recommended
rides. These are especially important for people who are not
accustomed to riding in large groups. Learning to ride and
communicate with others becomes quite important when participating
in a ride with 13,000 other cyclists.
Which brings us to Safety.
Last year, quite a few injuries were suffered by riders during the MS 150.
Hopefully, this year we can prevent injuries, but we must prepare!
Finally, as important to having ridden prior to the MS 150 is
taking care of your body while riding. This includes remaining
fueled as well as hydrated. Most people recommend 16 oz. of water
for every hour of riding, or a couple large swallows every 15 minutes, as
well as getting some nutrition every hour. Your nutrition can range
from energy bars to fruit. The best idea is to learn your personal
nutrition plan while training.
